This masterclass will examine the use of the wheel as a tool to make modular components of both functional and non-functional vessel forms. It will cover many aspects of wheel-forming from handles for cups and mugs through to assemblages of large vases and figurative forms derived from a close examination of common objects and experiences.

Although participants will be expected to have basic throwing skills, the purpose behind the workshop will be to learn to see in different ways, and construct objects of a scale beyond what might be regarded as one's limits.

Janet DeBoos is an internationally recognised ceramicist. DeBoos graduated with a science degree from the University of Sydney in 1969, and in the 1970s studied ceramics at the National Art School in Sydney and art history and Italian at the University of Sydney. From 1979 to 1980 she was head of the Ceramics Department at the National Art School and Head of the Ceramics Workshop at the ANU School of Art from 1998 to 2013. She has exhibited her work extensively in Australia and overseas, including in Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, the United States and the United Kingdom, and it is held in many public and private collections in Australia and overseas.
