Join award-winning international master kiln designer and builder, Fred Olsen, to learn about the use of the small fast wood-fire kiln.
Participants will be lectured on the construction of the kiln and economical packing, as well as receiving guidance on suitable clay bodies, glazes and forms suitable to the size of the kiln and the type of fast firing it provides.
In addition, participants will have the opportunity to discuss in a formal and informal atmosphere the pros and cons of wood firing specifically for this small kiln with one of the world’s best.
Fred Olsen has been a practicing potter since 1958 and is internationally regarded as one of the most knowledgeable kiln designer and builders working today. Apprenticed in 1961 to Japanese national Treasure potters, Tomimoto Kenkichi and Kondo Yuzo, Olson became one of the first American potters to be connected with the Kyoto City College of Fine Arts. In 1964 Olsen built the first salt glaze kiln in Australia and in 1973 published The Kiln Book, a comprehensive guide to kiln building which is now in its 3rd edition.
This class covers how to build, maintain, pack and fire a fast fire wood kiln. Participants will bring bisqued work to fire over the three days, Fred will discuss and demonstrate all of the intricacies of these types of kilns. Students will leave with sound knowledge and the plans of how to build this type of kiln in their studios. The results from this class will be unpacked at the Stepping Up welcome event on Wednesday 8 July at 6pm at Strathnairn Arts.
