Pukatja Community is unique on the APY Lands, in that both the school and art centre have well equipped ceramic studios. After school and in school holidays, Pukatja Pottery is inundated with young children wanting to learn how to thrown on the wheel, and to get amongst it in the ceramic studio.
Milyika will be discussing the Pukatja Pottery Youth Program, the role each generation plays in the art centre, and the importance of Ernabella Arts and Pukatja Pottery to the community, in particular to young people. Anangu have had mentoring in place for thousands of years, and as such Milyika will also discuss the next generation of Pukatja Potters, such as Tjimpuna Williams, who is stepping into the large shoes of her Aunty, Nyukana (Daisy) Baker.
Anne Thompson, one of Pukatja Pottery’s young artists and a qualified translator, will translate for Milyika Carroll.
