Earth in its Multitude: Indian Perspectives

Madhvi Subrahmanian, Sharbani Das Gupta, and Adil Writer

Presentation

Thursday, 9 July 2015 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

There are more traditional potters in India than anywhere else; its ancient customs having remained virtually intact until now. However modernization is altering long-established crafts and the debt to tradition often lost in the rush to express the new.

In an interlinked series of lectures Madhvi Subrahmanian examines the historic cultural underpinnings of Indian clay traditions, Sharbani Das Gupta presents a photo-documentary of the temporal work of Bengali idol-makers reflecting ancient philosophies of life, and Adil Writer focuses on clay practices in south India, a hub for contemporary ceramics. Together they illustrate an ongoing dialogue between traditional and modern India.
