Ceramics has a very unusual position in the contemporary arts and design environment, we work with a material that everyone eats off and drinks out of every day. Many people have roofs made of ceramics, floors made of ceramics, sit on toilets and wash their hands in sinks made of ceramics; and that’s just the low tech end – General Electric has a ceramics plant dedicated to manufacturing parts for Jet Engines and creating ceramic repair patches for space shuttles.
Kate Dunn’s presentation questions the directions of ceramics education in international art and design schools and looks at potential interdisciplinary models that can generate innovation and critically, opening up employment opportunities, build links with industry and present a variety of career trajectories for graduates.
The presentation will give examples of inter-disciplinary collaborations that are generating new and interesting models.
